Why the army?

Even if we cannot always see the traces they left, many conflicts and sieges have taken place in Québec City in its 400 years of history. Visiting the Fortifications and Citadel of Québec City allows us to understand the strategic importance of Québec. And don’t forget that Québec is the only fortified city north of Mexico and the entrance to Canada.

Starting at Places d’Armes (between the Tourist information Center and the Fairmont Château Frontenac), this 2 and a half hour private tour allows you to discover Québec City’s role as a military city and how the various conflicts and sieges have shaped this 400-year-old capital. During the visit of the Citadel, you may also enter the new Museum of the Citadel / Musée du Royal 22e Régiment. With state-of-the-art technology, the museum unveils real soldiers’ testimonies, photos and videos from the various conflicts that the Royal 22e Regiment has been involved in since its creation in 1914. Visitors can also see medals, badges, uniforms, and textiles, as well as weapons that once belonged to different military units.

From June 24th to the first Monday of September (weather permitting) attend the 9 or 10 am visit of The Citadel and witness the famous changing of the guard ceremony. The last part of the tour takes us to Battlefields Park (the Plains of Abraham) where the well-known battle between the French and British armies took place in 1759. We will end our tour with a discussion of the city walls.
